Quilting Services

Costs and Preparation

This guide provides details on the costs and preparation required for my quilting services.

Pricing Your Quilt

I price my quilting a bit different than some long-armers. I try to make it easy for you and for me! You may notice my pricing is a bit higher. That is because I include your batting, thread and needle costs in the edge-to-edge pricing! You don’t have to worry about calculating all of those things separately.

To estimate the cost of your all-over (edge-to-edge) quilting, you can use a simple formula:

  1. Calculate Square Inches: Multiply your quilt’s width by its length.
    • Example: A 60″ x 60″ quilt is 3,600 square inches (60 x 60).
  2. Calculate Estimated Cost: Multiply the square inches by $.035
    • Example: 3,600 x $0.035 per square inch = $126.00
  3. Minimum Charge: My minimum charge for small quilts is $60.00

Materials & Preparation

Batting

Batting is included in my Edge-to-Edge fee. If you prefer to use your own batting, please see instructions below.

  • My Stock: I carry Hobbs 80/20 Cotton batting and it is included in the Edge-to-Edge pricing.
  • Your Own Batting: If you provide your own, it must be at least 3 inches larger than your quilt top on all four sides. For a 60″ x 60″ quilt, you would need a batting of at least 66″ x 66″.

Backing

Your quilt backing is a crucial part of the process.

  • Required Size: All backing must be at least 5 inches larger than the quilt top on all four sides.
  • Piecing Fee: If your backing is not large enough, I cannot load it onto the frame without adding fabric. This will incur a $25 fee to cover the cost of the material and my time.
  • Piecing Service: If you have fabric shipped directly to me, I can do a basic piecing (one seam) of your backing for an additional $30.

Quilt Top & Borders

To ensure the best results, your quilt top and borders should be square.

  • If your quilt top is not square or the borders are wavy, some puckering may occur, and I cannot guarantee a perfect outcome.
  • Additional fees may be added for extra time spent pressing or adjusting.

Needle & Thread

  • I have priced in the cost of thread and needles. You do not have to worry about paying a separate fee!
  • I exclusively use Glide Thread and have a wide variety of colors in stock. If you have a particular color in mind, please refer to Glide’s color options and let me know. I’ll be happy to order it, but it may delay your quilting.

Trimming

  • I trim all quilts after quilting as a complimentary service if you want me to do your binding. Otherwise, I do not trim or square your quilt.
  • Note: I do not trim or bind minky-backed quilts.

Binding Services

I offer several binding options for your finished quilt. To discuss hand binding, please text me, as availability is limited and I must work that into my schedule as I have time.

  • Applied to Top: $0.18 per linear inch. You provide the prepared binding strips, and I attach them to the quilt top for you to finish by hand.
  • Prep & Attach: $0.25 per linear inch. You provide the fabric, I prepare the binding strips, and attach them to the quilt top for you to finish by hand.
  • Full Machine Binding: $.30 per linear inch. You provide the fabric, I prepare the binding strips and attach them to the quilt back and machine stitch down the front.
  • Full Hand Binding: $0.35 per linear inch. You provide the fabric, I prepare the binding strips and attach to the quilt front and hand stitch the back.

How to Estimate Binding Costs:

  • Add the length of all four sides of your quilt to get the total linear inches.
  • Example: For a 60″ x 60″ quilt, the total is 240 linear inches (60+60+60+60). Multiply this by the per-inch rate to get your estimate.

Shipping & Billing

Postage

  • You Pay: All postage costs are the client’s responsibility.
  • Outbound Shipping: I recommend shipping your quilt to me via UPS or USPS using a flat-rate box, as they include tracking and some insurance.
  • Return Shipping: Once your quilt is finished, I will calculate the exact cost of return postage, which will be added to your final invoice.
  • Insurance: I am not responsible for lost or stolen packages. You can request additional postal insurance on your form for the return trip. Recently, some have chosen to include an air tag within their package to be able to track its whereabouts. You are welcome to do this and I will send it back along with the quilt once it is complete.

Billing

  • You will not be billed until your quilt is finished.
  • Once your quilt is complete, I will send you a text with photos, followed by an email with a link to pay the invoice and tracking information for the return shipment.
  • Your quilt will be shipped once payment is received.

Turnaround Time

  • My typical turnaround time is around 4 weeks.
  • During busy season it can be as much as 6 weeks, so please plan accordingly!
  • Rush requests may be considered, but an additional $75 fee will be included.

How to Prepare Your Quilt

  • Press: Press both your quilt top and backing thoroughly.
  • Trim Threads: Trim all loose threads from both the front and back of your quilt top. Dark threads can show through light fabric if not trimmed.
  • Mark Direction: If your quilt top or backing is directional, mark the top with a safety pin and a note. I am not responsible for directional mistakes if this is not done.
  • Trim & Square: For the best results, ensure your quilt top and backing are square to prevent puckering. I cannot issue refunds for puckers if the quilt has wavy borders.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via phone, email, or text. I am happy to help ensure you get the results you want and that your quilt travels safely!
